Welcome to the UCA Project inside LEC!

In this space, you will find information about the participation of the "Cognitive Studies Lab" - LEC in the UCA Project (One computer per child), promoted by the federal government. The published articles describe the objectives of this project, the technological solutions used, as well as the pedagogical method applyed by LEC and the events of this new educacional approach.

Questions and answers about UCA Project in LEC

What is the UCA Project?

The UCA Project (One Computer per Student Project) is an initiative of the Federal Government that, since 2005, has investigated the possibility of adoption of educational laptops as a means of increasing the quality of Brazilian public education. The project is sustained by the pedagogical proposal named modality 1:1 (one laptop per student), which aims to provide each student from the public system in Elementary School with one laptop.

How does LEC take part in the project?

In December 2006, our laboratory was invited by the Advisory body of the Republic Presidency and the Ministry of Education to coordinate the trial experience of the UCA Project in Rio Grande do Sul State. Other four states integrated the first stage of the investigation ââ?¬â?? São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Brasilia and Tocantins ââ?¬â?? testing three models of laptop in different educational establishments. The role of LEC ââ?¬â?? Cognitive Research Lab of the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul ââ?¬â?? is to accomplish and evaluate, from technical and educational point of view, the experience of insertion of laptops in the school, besides building models for the future large-scale project. We count, on this mission, on the support from the non-profit organization "Digital Thought Foundation", which has done significant actions related to social and digital inclusion of needy communities to a self-sustainable development.

Who are the researchers?

The team is composed by professors who guide different lines of research, students, masters and doctoral students from several units of UFRGS (Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul), students technicians in programming and developers of systems and applications, who are organized into interdisciplinary groups. The work is supported by UFRGS Secretariat of Distance Education (SEAD), the Secretariat of Distance Education of the Ministry of Education (SEED/MEC) and the Department of Education of the State Government (SEC/RS). This cooperation encourages collaborative exchanges among universities, government and community.

What is XO?

XO is the name of the model of laptop used in our trial school. It was created by the non-governmental organization OLPC (One Laptop per Child), which idealized the project that, nowadays, attends several developing countries. OLPC was founded by professors from MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology), in Media Lab. Why the name XO? The answer lies in the design formed by the rotation of letters in 90 degrees counter-clockwise, which reminds a child.

And the trial school?

The pilot experience has been conducted through a partnership with Luciana de Abreu Public Elementary School, near the university. It is mainly attended by students from families of popular class. It offers Elementary grades during daytime and classes of "EJA" system (Education for adults and young people) at night. Every student and teacher of Elementary grades received a prototype of XO laptop.

Can my school also participate?

The distribution of laptops in large-scale depends on the satisfactory implementation of the pilot experiences and on the process of bidding in progress. By now, there are only prototypes at experimental stage, whose number is limited to the use in trial schools. A bidding is scheduled for this year in order to buy 150 thousand laptops to be used in the next stage of the project, but the schools which will integrate this second phase have already been chosen by the Ministry of Education. It is important to emphasize that our lab is not responsible for the indication or selection of cities and schools that are part of UCA. Our effort has the goal of providing technical and educational subsidies to help government agencies to understand the complex context of the use of laptops and collaborate to expand the modality 1:1 to all public Brazilian schools as soon as possible.

What is the methodology of Learning Projects?

The Learning Projects Methodology is the methodological proposal created by LEC to implement the transition of an instructionist model of education to a pedagogy focused on the students' learning. When creating learning projects, on the contrary to what happens in traditional classes, students choose the topics to be studied, based on their own needs and motivations, and the issues are worked in an interdisciplinary way. The idea is to enable students to become authors of their knowledge, changing themselves from receivers to agents in the learning process. Teachers, in turn, replace the role of transmitters of information by the role of students' advisors and partners. Several researches conducted at LEC for 30 years and based on this methodology, such as Amora Project, have demonstrated its success and benefits to children.

Which are the changes in the modality 1:1?

Former Brazilian proposals which were linked to information technology in education had as a model the shared use of machines in lab environments. But this format, in most cases, offered students only a limited access to computers. Often, in schools with a large number of students, individual access to machinery was around one hour per month, period of time that certainly is not enough for a student to immerse in an experience of use, just offering a superficial familiarity. Besides that, the schools didn't change their practices face to the insertion of the computer. There wasn't, thus, a relation of ownership of the computer by the student. The modality 1:1 provides, in addition to mobility, the experience of a true immersion of the student in digital culture.

Why do we base our practices on PCNs?

The rules which orientate the educational system in Brazil are extremely democratic. The Law of Guidelines and Bases on Brazilian Education ensure each school community freedom and responsibility to plan and carry out its own political-pedagogical project. The PCNs ââ?¬â?? National Curricular Parameters ââ?¬â?? are aligned with the perspective of knowledge construction, presenting an open approach of the curriculum and observing the huge Brazilian cultural diversity. They emphasize interdisciplinarity and define as curricular contents concepts, attitudes and skills, highlighting aspects such as companionship, cooperation and solidarity.
